In Memory of Richard L. Berryman, M.D.
D. Rick Brown, M.D.
Dr. Brown is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. He received a Bachelors of Engineering degree from Vanderbilt University in 1973. He is a cum laude graduate of the Department of Bio-Medical Engineering at Vanderbilt. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from The University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1979. He attended medical school at UASOM on a United States Naval Scholarship. His initial postgraduate medical training was with the Navy at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Oakland, California, an affiliate program of the University of California in San Francisco. He completed a three-year Internal Medicine residency at Carraway Methodist Medical Center in Birmingham. His medical military career included an assignment as Medical Officer on board the USS MARS (AFS-1). His assignment on board MARS (AFS-1) included a twelve-month deployment to the Indian Ocean in support of the USS NIMITZ (CVN-68) Battlegroup during the Iran Hostage Crisis. His final military assignment was as Head of the Department of Medicine at The Naval Hospital Roosevelt Roads in Puerto Rico. During his three-year assignment there he was involved with the triage and crisis management of Navy SEAL personnel wounded in combat during the Grenada Rescue Mission. He was the recipient of a Naval Meritorious Unit Citation for the medical support interaction. He was also awarded The Navy Achievement Medal for multiple other hospital and patient-care actions while assigned at Roosevelt Roads. He returned to Birmingham and civilian Internal Medicine practice in 1987 when he joined Southside Internists, P.C. In 1994, Southside Internist, P.C. and Lakeview Internal Medicine, P.C. merged to form the nexus of Southview Medical Group, P.C. Dr. Brown is one of the founding members of the twenty- eight physicians that presently compose Southview Medical Group, P.C. Dr. Brown practices ambulatory (out patient) medicine and admits patients requiring hospital or inpatient treatments to the Hospitalist group at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Dr. Brown is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Anne-Laura R. Cook, M.D.
Dr. Cook is a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She attended the University of Alabama and was an active member of the New College and University Honors Programs. She graduated cum laude with a Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies: Pre Medical Studies. She received her Medical Degree at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Dr. Cook completed her Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the Baptist Health System in Birmingham, Alabama. Dr. Cook is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. Her special interests are Preventive Medicine, Women’s Health, Sports Medicine, and Care of the Medically Complex Patient. Dr. Cook joined Southview Medical Group in 2009. Dr. Cook is a member of the American College of Physicians, Jefferson County Medical Society, National Physicians Alliance, and Wilderness Medical Society.
Noah J. Fitzpatrick, M.D.
Dr. Fitzpatrick is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. He attended Vanderbilt University, graduating with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. He received his Medical Degree at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Dr. Fitzpatrick completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the University of Alabama Hospital. Dr. Fitzpatrick is board certified in Internal Medicine. His special interests include Diabetes, Heart Failure, Osteoporosis, Lipid disorders, Hypertension and Preventative Medicine. Dr. Fitzpatrick joined Southview Medical Group, P.C. in 1998.
David B. Hall, M.D.
Dr. Hall is a native of Decatur, Alabama. He attended Birmingham Southern College, graduating with a B.S. degree in Biology. He received his Medical Degree degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama. He completed his Internship and Residency training at Methodist Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Hall is board certified in Internal Medicine. Dr. Hall joined the Southview Medical Group, P.C. (formerly Lakeview Internal Medicine, P.C.) in 1990. His special interests include Diabetes, Hypertension and Heart Disease. Dr. Hall is a Diplomat, National Board of Medical Examiners, American Board of Internal Medicine.
Michael K. Han, M.D.
Dr. Han is a native of Louisiana. He attended the University of California where he received a B.A. in Biology. He obtained his Medical Degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine. Dr. Han completed his Internship and Residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he received the Argus Society award for "Best Teaching Intern/Resident" in 1995-1996. Dr. Han practices ambulatory (out patient) medicine and admits patients requiring hospital or inpatient treatments to the Hospitalist group at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Dr. Han is board certified in Internal Medicine. He joined Southview Medical Group, P.C. in 1998.
Linda K. Hudson, M.D.
Dr. Hudson is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. She attended the University of Alabama, graduating cum laude with a B.S. in Chemistry. She completed her Medical Degree at the University of Alabama Medical School. She did her Internship and her Residency training at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Hudson is board certified in Internal Medicine. Her special interests are in Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension. Dr. Hudson joined Southview Medical Group, P.C. (formerly Lakeview Internal Medicine, P.C.) in 1990. Dr. Hudson is a member of the Jefferson County Medical Society, Southern Medical Association and the American Medical Association. Dr. Hudson is also the Chairperson, Department of Medicine at St. Vincent 's Hospital.
Frank J. Malensek, M.D.
Dr. Malensek is a native of Minnesota. He completed his undergraduate degree and Medical Degree from Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. Dr. Malensek did his Internship and Residency Training at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals. Dr. Malensek joined Southview Medical Group in 2003. He has special interests in Diabetes, Hypertension and Cholesterol Management. Dr. Malensek practices ambulatory (out patient) medicine and admits patients requiring hospital or inpatient treatments to the Hospitalist group at St. Vincent’s Hospital. Dr. Malensek is board certified in Internal Medicine. He also received his MBA from Auburn University.
Gerald P. Norris, M.D.
Dr. Norris is a native of Alabama. He graduated from the University of North Alabama with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry. He received his Medical Degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Dr. Norris completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at Carraway Methodist Medical Center. Dr. Norris is board certified in Internal Medicine. He is co-author of Extend Your Lifespan. Dr. Norris joined Southview Medical Group, P.C. (formerly Southside Internist Group, P.C.) in 1989.
Craig J. Rich, M.D.
Dr. Rich is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. He graduated from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Microbiology. He received his Medical Degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. Dr. Rich completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the University of Minnesota Hospitals and Clinics. Dr. Rich is board certified in Internal Medicine. Morris L. Roebuck, Jr., M.D.
Dr. Roebuck is a native of Mobile, Alabama. He attended Birmingham-Southern College, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Biology-Psychology. He completed his Medical Degree at the University of Alabama School of Medicine and his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the University of Alabama - Birmingham. Dr. Roebuck is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. His special interests are diabetes, congestive heart failure, and critical care medicine. Dr. Roebuck joined Southview Medical Group, P. Duane B. Shroyer, M.D.
Dr. Shroyer is a native of Florida. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi and a Medical Degree from the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Medicine in Jackson, Mississippi. He completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Dr. Shroyer is board certified in Internal Medicine. Dr. Shroyer joined Southview Medical Group, P.C. (formerly Lakeview Internal Medicine, P.C.) in 1988. Dr. Shroyer is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, Alabama State Medical Society, Jefferson County Medical Society and American Society of Internal Medicine.
Jeremy D. Smith, M.D. Dr. Smith is a native of Gadsden, Alabama. He attended the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. He completed his Medical Degree at the University of Alabama School of Medicine and his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Dr. Smith is Board Certified in Internal Medicine. His special interests are diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension and heart disease. Dr. Smith joined Southview Medical Group, P.C. in 2008. Dr. Smith is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, Alabama Medical Association and the Jefferson County Medical Association.
Mary Alice Strawn, M.D. Dr. Strawn is a native of Alabama. She attended Tulane University graduating with a degree in Cell and Molecular Biology. Dr. Strawn received her medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She completed her Internship and Residency in Internal Medicine at Baptist Health Systems, Birmingham. Dr. Strawn is Board Certified with the American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Strawn is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Physicians and the Society of Hospital Medicine. Dr. Strawn joined Southview Medical Group in February 2005. Prior to joining Southview, Dr. Strawn practiced as a hospitalist for 2.5 years in Pensacola, Florida.
Catherine L. Thomas, M.D.
Dr. Thomas is a native of Nashville, Tennessee. She received her undergraduate degree from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee and her Medical Degree from the University of Tennessee. She completed her Internal Medicine Internship and Residency from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Thomas is board certified in Internal Medicine. Dr. Thomas joined Southview Medical Group, P.C. (formerly Lakeview Internal Medicine, P.C.) in 1991 Dr. Thomas is a member of the Jefferson County Medical Society, Medical Association State of Alabama and The American College of Physicians.
Joseph E. Welden, Jr., M.D.
Dr. Welden is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. He attended Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, graduating Magna cum laude with a B.S. degree in Interdepartmental Science. He received his Medical degree at the University of Alabama School of Medicine and completed his Internship and Internal Medicine Residency at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Welden is board certified in Internal Medicine. His special interests are preventive care, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, diabetes and osteoporosis. Dr. Welden joined Southview Medical Group, P.C. (formerly Southside Internist Group, P.C.) in 1987 and is currently President/CEO of the group and Vice Chief of the Medicine Department at St. Vincent 's Hospital. Dr. Welden is an active member of the Jefferson County Medical Society, American College of Physicians, the Birmingham Clinical Club and the Southeastern Clinical Club.
Infectious Disease David W. Barnes, M.D.
Dr. Barnes is a native of Macon, Georgia. He received a B.A. in Biology, graduating Cum Laude, at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and his Medical Degree from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Barnes completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the Vanderbilt University Hospital. He completed his fellowship in Infectious Disease at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Dr. Barnes is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. Dr. Barnes joined Southview Medical Group, P.C. (formerly Lakeview Internal Medicine, P.C.) in 1989. Dr. Barnes has a special interest in Travel Medicine and has established a Travel Clinic at Southview Medical.
Sharmini E. Long, M.D.
Dr. Long is a native of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Southwestern Adventist University in Keene, Texas and her Medical Degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. She completed her Internal Medicine Internship and Residency and her Endocrinology Fellowship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Long is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. Dr. Long is a member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, American Thyroid Association, and Endocrine Society. Her special interests are Diabetes, Thyroid and Pituitary Dysfunction. Dr. Long joined Southview Medical Group in 2009.
Maria S. Prelipcean, M.D.
Dr. Prelipcean is a native of Bucharest, Romania. She received her Medical Degree from "Carol Davila" Medical School in Bucharest. She completed her Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago, Academic Internal Medicine Fellowship at Northwestern University in Chicago and Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Fellowship at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Dr. Prelipcean is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. Dr. Prelipcean is a member of the American College of Physicians, Endocrine Society, American Association of Clinical Endocrinologist, and American Medical Association. Her special interest includes diabetes, osteoporosis and general endocrinology. Dr. Prelipcean joined Southview Medical Group, P. C. in 2003.
Jack M. Averett, Jr., M.D.
Dr. Averett is a native of Columbus, Georgia. He graduated with a B.S. degree in Zoology from the University of Georgia. He obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He did his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. He also completed his Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Dr. Averett is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Dr. Averett joined Southview Medical Group, P.C. in August, 1996.
Gastroenterology & Hepatology Joanna L. Siegel, M.D.
Dr. Siegel is a native of New York. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biological Basis of Behavior from the University of Pennsylvania. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Southern California where she was a Dean's scholar. Dr. Siegel did her Internal Medicine Internship at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles and her Internal Medicine Residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She completed her fellowship in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Dr. Siegel is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Dr. Siegel joined Southview Medical Group, P.C. in December, 2005.
Richard L. Cox, Jr., M.D., FACC
Dr. Cox is a native of Burlington, North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina where he graduated with a degree in Zoology. He received his Medical Degree from the Wake Forest Medical School and did his Internal Medicine Internship, Residency and his Cardiology Fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Cox is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. Dr. Cox joined Southview Medical Group, P.C. (formerly Southside Internists, P.C.) in 1981.
Thomas D. Nielsen, M.D.
Dr. Nielsen was raised in Atlanta, GA. He attended the Georgia Institute of Technology where he earned a Bachelor of Science and a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering. He received his MD from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and trained at Duke University Medical Center for Internal Medicine Internship and Residency. He completed his Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Alabama Medical School in Birmingham, AL. Dr. Nielsen previously worked as an Engineer and Programmer in the Medical Equipment Industry and in Medical Research. Dr. Nielsen is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Board Eligible in Cardiovascular Diseases. Dr. Nielsen joined Southview Medical Group in 2009.

J. Michael Parks, M.D., FACC
Dr. Parks is a native of Georgia. He attended University of the South (Sewanee) and graduated with a BS degree in Chemistry. He received his Medical Degree from the University of Alabama Medical School. Dr. Parks completed postgraduate training at University of Texas Southwestern Affiliated Hospitals and Parkland Memorial Hospital and Dallas VA Hospital. He completed his Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at the University of Alabama Medical School. Dr. Parks has participated in numerous research projects and authored/co-authored a number of journal articles and abstracts. Dr. Parks is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology. Prior to joining Southview Medical Group, P.C. in 1996, Dr. Parks was an Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Cardiovascular Disease at University of Alabama at Birmingham.
David Schultz, M.D., PhD.
Dr. Schultz is a native of Indiana. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Chemistry, graduating with distinction, from Manchester College in Indiana and received his Medical Degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed a post-doctoral Fellowship and Residency from the University of Alabama Birmingham and fulfilled two Fellowships at Emory University. Dr. Schultz is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases. Dr. Schultz joined Southview Medical Group, P.C. in 2004. Dr. Schultz has authored/co-authored numerous Publications and abstracts. Janet J. Cash, M.D. Dr. Cash is a native of Centre, Alabama. She attended Jacksonville State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She received her Master's Degree in Nursing from Emory University. Dr. Cash was a Nursing Instructor at Gadsden State Community College before returning to school and completing her Medical Degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She did her Dermatology Internship and Residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Cash is certified with the American Board of Dermatology. Beth Garwick, DPT Beth is a native of Kansas, where she attended the University of Kansas and received her Bachelor's of Education degree in sports science. She then received her Health Sciences Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree with honors from the University of St. Augustine. Beth is certified in physical therapy in the state of Alabama. She joined Southview in 2006 as the Director of Physical Therapy. Danalynn Guasteferro, D.P.M.
Dr. Guasteferro is a native of Buffalo, New York. She attended LeMoyne College in Syracuse, New York, graduating with a degree in Psychology. She completed her Podiatric medicine Training at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Guasteferro completed her Podiatric Surgical Residency at Botsford General Hospital which is affiliated with Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Guasteferro is Board Certified with the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and with the American Board of Primary Podiatric Medicine and Orthopedics. Dr. Guasteferro joined Southview Medical Group, PC in 2008. Dr. Guasteferro is also a member of the American Professional Wound Care Association, the Alabama Podiatric Medical Association, the American Association of Women Podiatrists and the American Medical Athletic Association.
